Re: 166 2,5 V6 - Sportronic - low power on low rpm..

Hi man, I got your message and have sent you a PM in return.

To be short, yes it is that simple.

(Not so short now...)

Most difficult part was finding a proper engine. if an engine is overhauled, it's kind of new, but on the other hand: it hás usually been broken before. And 3.2 with low km's sold 'without the car around it' can be a result of a car crash, so think about if they can have been subject to impact force. Even if not, you will never exactly know how those km's got on it: normal behaviour or trashing the engine?

If you would stumble into a 3.5 or 3.7 24v Busso, that is really awesome. But be aware the ZF is designed for up to 330Nm of torque. The 3.5 and 3.7 will exceed that. 2nd issue: the head gaskets are different of course than those for a 3.2. As far as I know you will depend on Cosworth to get them, anyway it won't be a standard Alfa Romeo part you can easily purchase.

Mine is a daily driver, so therefor I stuck with a 3.2 as tempting as it was to go bigger.

Whatever you do, would be nice to see how your project evolves. Good luck again!

Re: 166 2,5 V6 - Sportronic - low power on low rpm..

Thanks Tjeerd

I have stumbled over a German companie who has fabric new 3.2s in store. And its a complete units with intake manifoil and all.
so it will be a complete new engine, and I will keep it stock to avoid any complications.
My engine has run 200.000km now and is still working as new, so its a shame to part it from det car.
But any how, the lack of power, is the only thing I can put my finger on, with the 166. Otherwise its almost perfect.
I have bought my self a *92 Alfa 164 QV and its much more fun to drive of course, but its still an old car in comparison to the 166.

Hi again.
Is there anybody in this forum that has tried Squadra chip on a 166 with the combination of 2,5V6 with Sportronic gearchange?
Any user experience that can be shared with me?

Re: 166 2,5 V6 - Sportronic - low power on low rpm..

Hello Atle,

I myself have no experience with the Squadra chip in a V6, but I am very satisfied with the chip on the JTD. I know for a fact that they deliver very good quality tuning.

As for the 2.5,... The best result you can have is if you install the inlet pipes and mounting plates of a 3.0, and then do the tuning. The performance will be very close to the 3.0'. The sportronic gearbox should be able to handle the performance increase without to much problems.

As a side note, just be sure the lack of power does not have an alterior cause... Make sure the airflowmeter, lambda sensors and ignition system are in good condition, and there is no air leaks in the intake ducting. By now a lot of 166' start developing this last problem. Also make sure that the cambelt timing is correct. That is very critical, and often happens if the belt was changed without the proper calipers. I know logic does not make sense, just mark the pulley's, and change the beelt, but in reality, it is very critical, and does affect the performance badly.

+1

Especially the 3.0 intake runners and base plates (larger diameter) in combination with a Squadra chip will give good results.

Second car with Squadra tuning, really satisfied. Both JTD but just wanted to tell you this man knows what he is doing.

Re: 166 2,5 V6 - Sportronic - low power on low rpm..

Thank you for sharing your experiance with me. I have the Squadra chip on my 164 QV.
Then i have to have one. and of course get those 3.0 inlet pipes with the baseplate as well.

the engine is in greate shape. no problems. its always been low on tourque on low rpm`s from 9 years ago, when i bougt it, and it had just runned 60.000Km.
I will find a dealer somehow. the biggest problem is perhaps to get hold of the inlet pipes, without paying too much.

and at the end, the 3,2 is what i really want. I will probobly import one, noe matter what the cost is. the 3,2 is the final and probobly the best Busso of them all. the old 3.0 12V has its caracter and tourque and sound. But the 24V has the endurance. my 166 has runned 201.000km now, and still not using any oil, and there are not even any valve ticking. so the 24V is a great engine after all.

I would like to order your calender. how to do that?
Best regards Atle
