2,5 sportronic - Tiny jerking with constant speed (80 90 km/h)

Hi all 166 fans (me included)

Is there anyone who has experianced this?

I have had my car for 9 years now, and I know my car and its behavior or tweeks, to mention that first. And it was not like this when i bougt it, thats for sure, so there are something wrong, and the fault has lasted for at least 3 years. the error is not big, and not that annoying, so that is the reason for not acting any sooner. the car is not used very often eighter.

so - the problem is:

In Norway, the speed limit is often 80 -90 km/h. And when i drive at this speed i feel tiny jerking from the driveline. Like if the engine is not running properly. This happens if the road is flat, and i dont have to use allmost any throttle at all. As soon as i put the throttle a few cm down, the car is accelerating smooth (without changing gear) and the engine respons is smooth, and the problem stops. The same happens when the road goes downhill, and i dont push the throttle at all. smooth speed deceleration.
so - when i increases the speed to about 110 - 120km/h and stay there, then the problem also stops. so the problem just occurs when i hold the speed at 80 - 90 km/h and is not accelerating and not deceleration.

the engine is running fine and there are no fault errors on the diagnose tool. I have changed all the sparkplugs, and the coils, and also the mass airflow meter.

then I suspect the sportronic unit. Or the trottle potension meter. The trottle potension meter is always in the same position when the car is running at 80 km/h on a flat road. So that can be the problem. ?

I have never flushed the sportronic transmission or changed oil, and the car has [sign in to see URL] on the clock. the problem occur at about [sign in to see URL].

any one who has experienced this sort of behavior on the 166 with sportronic transmission.

Best regards Atle, Norway

Not haveing particulary technical knowledge the first thing that comes into my mind is a off balance wheel or wheels.

Yes of course the wheel issue, but that has been sorted out. The wheels are fine, otherwise it still would be a problem when the car is in neutral and travelling downhill at 90km/h. And in neutral its fine in 90.
So there is something with the driveline that propels the car forward.

I am 99% sure it's the top engine mount. When this goes it feels like the drive is made from a rubber band or something like that, you get my drift....(I hope emoticon )

How is the car idling? Very smooth with no vibrations or a little rough?

Re: 2,5 sportronic - Tiny jerking with constant speed (80 90 km/h)

Hi again and thanks for the respond.
the upper enginemount has been changed. I think the car had runned approx [sign in to see URL] then. I looked at it a week ago (when i washed the car) emoticon and it looked ok, (as still new) and I tried to move the engine forward and back by hand with force and at the same time looked on the rubber, and it seemed fine. But still, there can be too much slack or movement. I just know my cars behavior. There is a set of Poly bushes for this upper engine mount, right?

the engine is running like butter. smooth as ever in any revs, when I idle it in P (park). so therefore i think it can have something to do with the sportronic. maybe. has any of you changed oil on the Sportonic gearbox? was there any improvement at all? (the Sportronic changes gear, up and down smooth, allmost seemless)
The only thing Ive find out today, when idling in Park, was that the engins revs does not follow the accelerator pedal from 800 rpm and upwards to about 2000rpms. over 2000 rpms the engine revs rises like the pressure on the trottle. But from Idle and up to 2000rpm I can move the trottle several mm and the revs not moving upvards. When you push the throttle further in a few mm, then the revs rises. But the rev does not rise evenly to the throttle push, cm for cm. Over 2000rpm, its ok.
Have you tried this exercice? shall it be like that? Throttle potensiometer troubles?
best regards Atle

That could be the problem. Any chance on getting a used one in good working order to test this?

I have no experience with a sportronic. From what i have heard a flush will help when it doesnt change gear smoothly anymore.

Re: 2,5 sportronic - Tiny jerking with constant speed (80 90 km/h)

I have now looked into it, and the upper motor link is not bad, but there are some crack in the rubber, so a new one would be even better.
the trottle potensiometer has been changed sometime before I bought the 166. [sign in to see URL] car had only 68k on the clock and the car was only 5 years old.
I looked into wire connections. I took them out and set them back in the same position, in case of a bad connection. And guess what, today its not so bad. maybe its only some connection issues?. I will do the same once more, and then i will use a spesific elektro spray for this purpose, and hope for the best emoticon

Re: 2,5 sportronic - Tiny jerking with constant speed (80 90 km/h)

Hi 166 fans (me included emoticon )
The car is running smoother than ever. We finely found the cause to the tiny jercking in constant speed, especially in uphill.
It was the left driveshaft! the inner joint had a wearing, that has lasted for some years, since I drove very little with the car for several years. Now I put [sign in to see URL] extra km on it since last spring and the driveshaft finely was making som ratteling noises in low speed corners.
I ordered a complete new driveshaft and my workshop installed it last week. And the jercking is gone. hurray emoticon

So there was probably unbalance in the driveshaft joint when the car had to maintain the speed on a slow uphill, and the joint was stressed a bit. At 110km/h and higher the jercking was gone.
Typical unbalance problems.
